Grand Canaria Island

Gran Canaria - one of the islands belonging to Macaronesia [2] the Canary Islands situated in the Atlantic Ocean, next to the north-west coast of Africa. Territorially belongs to Spain. Together with the islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura forms Province of Las Palmas. The capital of the island is the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The island occupies a central place in the Canarian archipelago and is situated between Tenerife and Fuerteventura.

Although historians can not agree, the majority of them believe that the original name of the island in the Guanche sounded TAMARAN or Tamarant. Modern and the name came from, as supposed, from the name of the dog Canaries can, however, according to the latest linguistic research and historical it is believed that it originates from antroponimu Canaria, one of the African tribes.

The island of Gran Canaria, with its surface almost 1,600 km² is the third largest and the second population of 802.247 inhabitants (National Statistics Institute of Spain, 01-01-2005) island archipelago. It is located at 28º north latitude and 15º 35 'longitude. It has called "a continent in miniature" due to its diversity of climate, geographical differences and diverse flora and fauna.

The island has a round shape of the mountain massif of volcanic origin in the center of the island. The highest point of the island is the Pico de Las Nieves (1949 m asl). Distinguished by the rock formations such as Roque Nublo (1,813 m asl) and Roque Bentayga (1412 m asl).
