The history of massage originated in ancient times when it was a complement to religious rites, and the time part of the interaction of folk medicine. Originating in India and China, was a natural method of healing. Even Hippocrates, then Celsus and Galen pointed to the use of massage in various disease entities. In Ancient Greece massaged athletes before competition to grease their bodies olive. Since the Middle Ages came to a standstill in medical science, and massage also ceased to be widely used.

In the sixteenth century massage technique she took a French physician Ambrose Paré. As a result of studies on the physiology, massage, and based on the observation of the positive effects of massage in patients after surgery, in his scientific work, he announced massage as an official method of treatment.

Thus, the problem dealt with in the seventeenth century physician Friedrich Hoffmann (1600-1672). Based on our own research and observations developed a program of massage in many cases of disease.

In the nineteenth century the greatest contribution to the development of therapeutic massage has put Swedish doctor Per Henrik Ling (1776-1839). He was co-author of "Swedish gymnastics", the scope of which includes therapeutic massage. Principles of massage with the indications and contraindications to exercise described the Dutch doctor Johan Mezger (1839-1909). He has set up a real school of classical massage and is considered the author of "scientific massage".

A significant impact on the dissemination of massage also had Polish scientific thought. Thanks to scientific publications doctor Isidore Zabludowski massage was treated on an equal footing with other departments of medical knowledge.

With the development of physiology and neurophysiology were created new methods of massage: Segmental, lymphatic, connective tissue and periosteal.

In Poland, a number of prominent experts in the field of rehabilitation deals with the promotion of massage, but the program of medical studies is still very poor in elements of rehabilitation and massage.
